Jane McDonald has revealed her reason for selling her £1million home which was meant to be her forever home after 20 years in it as she made a ‘difficult’ admission.

The 62-year-old singer and TV personality became a household name in 1998 when she appeared on the BBC series The Cruise and her debut album reached number one in the UK charts. Since then, Jane has gone on to score four UK top 10 albums and performed in prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the MGM Grand Las Vegas.

When it comes to her work on UK TV, Jane has presented the daytime talk shows Loose Women and Star Treatment. Recent years have seen her hosting the British Soap Awards after she was picked as Phillip Schofield’s replacement.

Known for never shying away from saying what she really thinks, Jane has now opened up about why she sold her beloved Wakefield bungalow. According to Jane, she was inspired to make a move after suffering two family tragedies.

Back in 2018, Jane’s beloved mum Jean passed away just days before Christmas. Then in March 2021, Jane’s fiancé Eddie Rothe sadly lost his battle with lung cancer at the age of 67.

Jane and Eddie initially began seeing each other in the 1980s, going on to rekindle their romance in 2008. The Searchers drummer Eddie proposed to the singer that same year, with the pair remaining engaged until his tragic passing.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Jane revealed that these losses made her decide to sell the five-bedroom detached property she had spent years lovingly renovating. She said: “I found it difficult. There was too much history there.”

Jane has gone on to buy a smaller house in the area, as well as buying a seaside property to spend time in when she needs a break. Jane noted: “We all need peace in our lives and I’ve got that now.”

Following Eddie’s death, Jane began living with her close friend and fellow singer Sue Ravey. Fans have seen the pair on on Channel 4’s Celebrity Gogglebox on a number of occasions.

“She’s still my bezzie mate, we’re going to be on the coast together in January. We still do everything together. It works brilliantly,” Jane stated.

Opening up about how the move went, Jane continued: “You’d be surprised at how much stuff you have. Seven skips later! I was ashamed of myself. You’ve got to let it all go. But Sue is great. She’ll ask me: ‘Why you holding onto this?’ Take a picture of it and bin it.”

While in the past Jane has welcomed her family into her old home to mark the holidays, she decided that she’d prefer to spend the 2025 festive season with her close friends instead.

She said: “No cooking for any of us. Everyone always came to us for Christmas dinner mainly because we had the biggest table and enough room to fit everyone in. Times change and you have to change with it.

“I’m now making new traditions. Let’s be honest, grief hits everyone eventually and if we could turn the clocks back to big family Christmasses, I’m sure we all would. But we can’t, so I’m moving forward.

“There is a positive side to grief, which is freedom. I can now choose to do what I want, when I want. It was hard for me to adjust to that, but now I’m embracing it.”
