18 Years Later, Russell Crowe’s Surprising Western Failure Redeems Itself on Streaming

Russell Crowe is back in the Oscar conversation thanks to his commanding performance in Nuremberg, but nearly 20 years ago he starred in a critically acclaimed Western flop that’s redeeming itself on streaming. In 2007, Crowe starred alongside Christian Bale and Ben Foster in 3:10 to Yuma, the Western hit following a rancher who agrees to help transport a captured outlaw to a train that will take him to court in Yuma. In America, 3:10 to Yuma is streaming on Peacock, but the film has been charting in the global VOD top 10 for over two weeks now on OSN, Apple TV, and other platforms.

3:10 to Yuma was beloved by both critics and audiences alike. It earned strong scores of 89% from critics and 86% from fans on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, but the strong reception wasn’t enough to save the film at the box office. Behind a budget of $55 million, 3:10 to Yuma grossed only $70 million at the global box office, falling more than $30 million short of its break-even point. It’s one of the more puzzling box office flops of Crowe’s career, but the film has redeemed itself on VOD and streaming in the years since its release.

Halsted Welles, Derek Haas, and Michael Brandt wrote the script for 3:10 to Yuma, and James Mangold directed the film. Haas recently created the canceled Prime Video series, Countdown, and he’s also famous for his work writing the One Chicago procedurals. Mangold most recently teamed up with Timothée Chalamet for the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, and he’s also famous for directing Logan, the 2017 superhero masterpiece.

Is Russell Crowe’s New WWII Movie on Streaming?

Russell Crowe most recently starred in Nuremberg, the beloved WWII courtroom drama in which he plays Hermann Göring, a Nazi general on trial for his war crimes. Nuremberg is currently available to watch at home via VOD platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV, where the film has easily infiltrated the global top 10. It grossed just over $30 million at the box office for Sony Pictures Classics, which will likely look to put the film on Netflix once it’s satisfied with its VOD haul. Nuremberg also stars Rami Malek and Michael Shannon, and it was written and directed by James Vanderbilt.
