BBC Breakfast witnessed an emotional moment on Monday’s programme as one guest became tearful whilst sharing heartbreaking news.

Throughout the most recent instalment, presented by Jon Kay and Emma Vardy, the duo unveiled a fresh addition to the programme featuring a new section entitled Rise & Shine.

Rise & Shine, which will air one day a week, aims to celebrate the positive work of individuals and groups right across the UK.

In Monday’s feature, BBC Breakfast spotlighted the efforts of litter picking group Crosby Wombles as BBC Breakfast host Jayne McCubbin met with the organisation.

Following testimonials from several group members regarding how the Crosby Wombles had supported them, Jayne revealed: “For magic like this to happen, there has to be a person who pulls it all together, and that person is Dawn.”, reports the Express.

Jayne then praised Dawn, declaring: “Well done, you. Well done!”(Image: bbc)

The host continued: “When Dawn helped set this group up back in 2022, she had a lovely husband by her side” with Jayne mentioning his name was Adrian.

In a heartbreaking and sad development, Jayne disclosed: “Last summer, he unexpectedly died and Dawn unexpectedly came to rely on this little litter-picking group in ways she’d never imagined.”

Following the display of a photograph of her late spouse, Dawn, visibly moved, expressed: “This community has been so supportive, incredibly supportive. There’s many stories shared in a safe environment, and people go away better for sharing.”

Jayne then praised Dawn, declaring: “Well done, you. Well done. You would have been lost without the work you’re doing” to which Dawn, who became emotional, confessed: “Completely!”

Dawn continued: “As Jo’s just said to me now, Adrian would be so proud, and I really do feel that.”

Honouring Dawn, Jayne declared to the group: “Doesn’t she do a brilliant job?” which left Dawn in tears over the recognition, particularly as everyone began applauding.

Jayne went on: “From litter to love and life-affirming friendships which make a place truly home.”

Concluding the piece, Jayne remarked: “Doesn’t she make a difference? These are the kinds of stories we would love to champion on Breakfast in 2026, please do get in touch” whilst an emotional and overwhelmed Dawn walked away following all the acclaim.

Back in the studio, presenter Emma commented: “Oh, so nice. We need a bit of this in the middle of our news bulletins, don’t we?”.

BBC Breakfast continues every day at 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
