BREAKING: Apartment fire breaks out in downtown Chilliwack

Dozens of people were left without a home after an apartment building went up in flames in downtown Chilliwack on the evening of Aug. 5.
The blaze happened around 7:25 p.m. in a four-storey building on Spadina Avenue at Mary Street.
Fire and heavy smoke were coming from the building and hundreds of people were outside on the street watching as flames crept up the sides.
Traffic was closed in all directions at the scene as crews with the Chilliwack Fire Department battled the blaze, which was at the rear of the building, from the air using ladder trucks.
Eventually, firefighters were able to enter the building to attack the fire from the inside.
People were being asked to move further away from the apartment building as the fire was spreading. It continued to flare up for more than an hour.
Emergency Support Services (ESS) was there to help support the victims and a city bus was brought in as a place for the evacuees to take refuge.
Police and and several paramedics were also at the fire, and at least two firefighters were seen being treated by paramedics on scene.
Power was knocked out to 2,472 customers in the area, according to BC Hydro.
