With No Sequel in Sight, Tom Cruise’s $200 Million Sci-Fi Epic Fights for Its Life on Streaming

Tom Cruise will star in his first original movie in almost 10 years later this year with Digger, but 11 years ago, he starred in a hit sci-fi thriller that’s in danger of losing serious ground on streaming. Cruise stars alongside Emily Blunt and Brendan Gleeson in Edge of Tomorrow, the 2014 sci-fi epic following a man who fights an alien invasion while reliving the same day over again each time he dies. Edge of Tomorrow is no longer streaming anywhere in America after recently being removed from Netflix, and the film is still hanging on by a thread in the global VOD top 10 in only two countries.

Fans have been begging for years for a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, and director Doug Liman has even confirmed that Warner Bros. keeps asking him about it. There has been no movement on a potential Edge of Tomorrow 2 for a while, though, and with Cruise focusing on other projects like Digger, Deeper, and Top Gun 3, it’s hard to find a spot for it on his busy calendar. Many fans have pushed back against the notion of Edge of Tomorrow needing a sequel, citing a quite finite ending, but Cruise, Liman, and Christopher McQuarrie could certainly find more story if needed.

Edge of Tomorrow has become something of a cult classic in the years since its release. It was certainly popular upon its premiere 10 years ago, but its fan base only grows by the year as more discover it for the first time. Edge of Tomorrow sits at scores of 91% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $381 million at the box office against a $178 million budget.

When Does Tom Cruise’s Next Movie Come Out?

Tom Cruise’s next movie, Digger, will be released in theaters later this year on October 17. It also stars Jesse Plemons and Riz Ahmed, and it reportedly follows a man who views himself as the most powerful person in the world, so he starts a world-ending disaster just to stop it and prove his prowess. The film comes from director Alejandro G. Iñárittu, who is best known for directing Tom Hardy’s Oscar-winning Western, The Revenant. Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon) also has a role in Digger.

Check out Edge of Tomorrow on VOD platforms like Prime Video or Apple TV, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
