ORLANDO, Fla. — A reporter asked Texas football quarterback Arch Manning Wednesday night if he had bragging rights on his uncle Peyton since Arch scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground in the Citrus Bowl win over Michigan, something his famous relative didn’t accomplish while at Tennessee.

Young Arch had just decimated the Wolverines’ defense and in the afterglow of a signature performance, his mind was on a much larger football canvas than Orange County’s Campus World Stadium.

“Nothing against the Citrus Bowl, but I think he played it twice,” Manning said. “I don’t want to have to play in it twice.”

Laughter ensued in the interview room because we all understood where he was going.

As long as Manning remains healthy and upright, it’s the stratosphere, definitely for him and possibly the 2026 Longhorns, too.

“We want to be SEC champions and we want to be national champions,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said.

No. 13 Texas’ 41-27 win over No. 18 Michigan was closer than the score suggested. The biggest difference?  The Texas Longhorns had Manning and the Michigan Wolverines did not. The clutch gene is his birthright and it was revealed time and time again Wednesday in a statement second half of the season that was a nothing like the roller coaster he rode the first six games.

MORE CEDDY: Texas is all smiles after Arch’s blowup

He threw for 221 yards in a four-touchdown season finale with a late score to freshman Kaliq Lockett — a perfect 30-yard drop-in-the-end zone bucket — that put the Horns up 31-27 with about seven minutes left — and ran for another 155 yards, including a 60-yard scoring sprint that was an ode to Vince Young’s 60-yard dash against the 2004 Wolverines that set the stage for a natty one season later.

A sign of bigger things to come

Perhaps this was Manning’s coming-out party, albeit on a stage much smaller than the one VY owned. There certainly won’t be any return trips to Orlando outside of a possible summer visit to Mickey and Minnie. The Longhorns will be back in the College Football Playoff next season because they have an alpha dog who we’ve seen gradually grow into the position. Sure, the Wolverines weren’t as good as Jim Harbaugh’s 2023 national champions, but interim head coach Biff Poggi had them ready to play and they gave the Horns all they could handle.

Let’s call him what he is: an emerging showstopper and 2026 appointment television for Texas fans who prefer the home recliner to a seat at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

MORE HORNS: Social reaction from Texas-Michigan

From a historical perspective, the numbers Manning produced rank right up there with some real titans of Texas football. Since the turn of the century, just two Longhorns quarterbacks had topped 3,000 yards passing, 25 touchdown passes, 500 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns in the same season. That would be Young in the 2005 national championship season and Colt McCoy in 2008, which was arguably the second-scariest team of Mack Brown’s 16-year tenure.

Manning finished this season with 3,163 yards passing and 26 touchdowns while also rushing for 514 yards and 10 ground scores. Arch just entered rarefied air.

Manning is coming into his own and it’s not just with his immense physical skills. After throwing three interceptions in his first three starts, he tossed only four more over the last 10 games. That’s 292 passes, including a streak of 119 consecutive attempts without a pick that he will carry into next season.

Texas Longhorns linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith (26) lifts the trophy with head coach Steve Sarkisianas the Longhorns celebrate after winning the Citrus Bowl 41-27 against the Michigan Wolverines at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, Dec. 31, 2025.

It’s about to get fun. Manning, fellow locker room leader Colin Simmons and plenty of support will be back next season after a 10-3 campaign that pushes the program’s trajectory skyward entering the offseason. Sarkisian had best hit Carvana — aka the transfer portal — with his finest sales pitch to put the right talent around a couple of future NFL stars.

“Watch out for Archie Boy,” Simmons said. “Watch out for him. No pressure on him. He is who he is and you know who he is.”

Simmons will get no argument from Poggi, who was asked to assess the nightmare Manning can present to opposing defenses.

“He’s everything they say he is,” Poggi said Tuesday. “I think he’s an outstanding leader and I think the things he says and does shows his leadership but as a player, he can do it all. He can make all the throws. He’s intelligent. He can run. For a defense, he’s a real problem.”

The season second-half success was nice, but there is another level out there and Manning knows it’s attainable if the right things happen over these next seven months.

“We’ve got to continue to be better leaders and get this thing going,” he said. “The standard is the standard at Texas. So we’ve got to keep it going and have a good 2026.”

Arch Manning: closer

Manning isn’t a doctor, but he made a couple of notable house calls over Texas’ last two games that have Longhorn Nation believing he can lead this program back to the championship circle.

One month before Manning closed out the Citrus Bowl with a scoring run that was clocked at 21.7 miles per hour, he sent Texas A&M scurrying back to College Station with a 35-yard burst. Wednesday’s jaunt was the second longest of his career, just behind his 67-yard sprint in last season’s 56-7 win over UTSA.

The game-clincher came one play after linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith’s second interception, which preserved a 34-27 lead. The bench went nuts, of course, as Manning — whose lip had been bloodied on an earlier tackle — pointed toward the Texas section seated behind his bench and pounded his chest to its delight.

It was reminiscent of so many players from Texas’ 2005 title team who held a special reverence for Young because they believed he would figure out a way to bring home a win, no matter how dire things got. This isn’t to put Manning in VY’s class because Manning is far from a finished product, but to ignore his upside would be not paying attention to what’s glaringly obvious.

Manning is a star on a collision course with super stardom and the Longhorns could be a beneficiary next season.
