This raucous comedy movie from 2015 has shot up the Netflix charts despite originally receiving terrible reviews

One of Netflix’s top picks for films this weekend is an unlikely action-comedy from over 10 years ago.
After shooting up the charts this week it’s currently at the number two spot as of Saturday, 3rd January, just behind the harrowing true crime documentary Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story.
It’s even beaten one of the streaming service’s biggest hits for the end of 2025, the new Knives Out murder mystery, Wake Up Dead Man, which is currently at number three.
However, the film’s impressive performance may come as a shock as it received an appalling 8 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of release.
Don’t let the professional reviewers put you off, though, as Hot Pursuit, starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara, has plenty of die-hard fans willing to fight in its corner.

A-list Big Little Lies star Witherspoon portrays Officer Rose Cooper, who is forced on a perilous mission through Texas to protect the wife of a cartel boss, Vergara’s Daniella Riva, from an army of corrupt cops and criminals who want her head on a chopping block.
One five-star review from an RT user called it “one of the funniest movies ever!!!!!
“Bought it and my daughter and I watch it whenever we need a good laugh. Gets funnier every time we watch it.”
Another rave response declared: “This movie was one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen! The critics are wrong on this one, like they usually are for fun comedies that shouldn’t be taken too seriously.”

Someone else said: “Hot Pursuit is a hilarious and high-energy comedy that fully delivers on its promise of laughs. Reese Witherspoon and Sofía Vergara have fantastic chemistry, and their contrasting personalities make for nonstop entertainment.
“The movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, which works in its favor, leaning into over-the-top humor and fast-paced chaos. It’s fun, lighthearted, and consistently funny, making it a perfect choice if you’re in the mood for a feel-good comedy.”
Another fan even compared it to an 80s classic, writing: “I personally don’t think it’s that bad.
“It’s basically a female version of Midnight Run, but aimed at a younger audience. Of course no way near as good. But it’s still decent & entertaining.”
There were plenty of strong reactions on IMDb, too, where one fan gave it a 10/10 and said: “I totally loved this funny movie which has entertaining action scenes and girls that are sweeter than sugar.
