Schools Closed, Metrobus Stopped in First Storm of 2026

Those on the Avalon are digging out this morning after the first major snowfall of 2026.
The bulk of the it fell overnight, with snowfall expected to wrap up this morning.
Schools in the metro region are closed for the morning with an update to be provided around 10:30.
Environment Canada meteorologist Erika Price says the bulk of it fell overnight with 12 cm recorded at YYT.
The metro area can expect to see another couple centimetres before the snow tapers off this morning.
Roads conditions are hazardous in some spots and visibility is compromised due to winds gusting in the 60-70 km/h range.
Metrobus and GoBus will not be operating this morning. An update on services will be provided at noon.
There’s a slew of delays and cancellations over at St. John’s International. Several businesses are also closed or have delayed openings.
The brunt of the wintry system is contained to the eastern portion of the island with lesser snowfall amounts reported in central.
