Las Vegas Raiders fire Pete Carroll after one season with league-worst record

The Las Vegas Raiders have fired head coach Pete Carroll following a 3-14 season, the team announced Monday.

This was Carroll’s first season — and now only season — in charge of the Silver & Black.

The decision to fire Carroll means the Raiders’ next hire will make four coaches in four seasons and their fifth permanent coach since relocating to Las Vegas in 2020.

Majority owner Mark Davis and general manager John Spytek will have to find a new leader for a new era.

Las Vegas secured the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft thanks to a league-worst record, factoring in strength of schedule.

In a statement, Davis said Spytek “will lead all football operations in close collaboration with [minority owner] Tom Brady, including the search for the club’s next head coach.

“Together, they will guide football decisions with a shared focus on leadership, culture, and alignment with the organization’s long-term vision and goals,” Davis said.

The Raiders hired Carroll last year after a 4-13 season ended with Antonio Pierce’s dismissal. Carroll had previously coached the Seattle Seahawks from 2010 to 2023, leading the team to one Super Bowl championship, two NFC championships, five division titles and eight 10-win seasons.

Carroll said he expected to build a winning culture immediately in Las Vegas, but the season quickly went off track as the team struggled with turnovers and scoring under new quarterback Geno Smith.

The offense ranked last in the NFL in total points and total yards for the season, while Smith threw a league-leading 17 interceptions.

Two assistant coaches, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly and special teams coordinator Tom McMahon, were both dismissed midseason, but those changes yielded little in the way of results until Sunday’s finale, a last-second 14-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, snapped a 10-game losing streak.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Jan. 2, Carroll said he was disappointed with the way the season turned out, but he wanted the players to remain focused.

“I’ve never even dreamed it would be like this, but what I have learned … is that these guys will continue to work and they’ll stay with it,” he said.
