Is your school open on Tuesday? Latest school closures for Staffordshire and the West Midlands and advice for parents

Schools across the West Midlands were forced to close their doors on Monday after snowfall on Sunday night, with freezing ice also making conditions difficult for motorists.

The West Midlands was included in a yellow warning for snow and ice on Sunday afternoon, with commuters being warned of potentially dangerous road conditions.

Staffordshire County Council has already listed a number of schools on its website that will remain closed tomorrow (Tuesday),

They are:

St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Rugeley –  Closed due to snow

Tillington Manor Primary School, Stafford –  Additional PHMAT INSET day

Wightwick Hall School, Wolverhampton –  Due to snowfall, freezing conditions, and safety concerns relating to travel and the school site, the school will be closed. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

C.E.D.A.R.S. Newcastle & Moorlands –  Heavy snow/ice in and around the school site. Local road closures due to accidents and severe road conditions have made it unsafe and difficult for staff and many pupils who come in taxis to get to school. All parents/carers contacted and work to be sent home for today and the likely further closure tomorrow with more snow forecast for the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Sir Thomas Boughey High School –  Due to snowfall, freezing temperatures, and associated travel and site access issues, the school will remain closed. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding.

Walton Hall Academy –  Due to freezing temperatures and potential of more snow, the school will remain closed on Tuesday 6th January. The roads surrounding the school are unsafe. We apologise for the inconvenience a further day of closure causes.

Alsagers Bank Primary Academy –  Due to hazedous site and surrounding road school will be closed on Tuesday 6th January

Madeley High School –  Following continued freezing temperatures, no overnight thaw and a further risk of snow, site, transport and access conditions remain unsafe. We apologise for the inconvenience this causes and thank families for their understanding as we prioritise the safety of pupils and staff.

Ravensmead Primary School –  School is closed due to the adverse weather conditions.

The Orme Academy –  Due to snowfall, freezing temperatures, and associated travel and site access issues, the school will remain closed. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding.

Other authorities in the West Midlands said a decision for a school top open or close is a matter for individual schools.

In Dudley, eight schools closed on Monday, though one for an inset day, and some are expected to remain closed tomorrow.

On their website Dudley Council said: “Most schools contact parents directly if there are any closures. We also advise you to check your school’s website.”

Motorists in Perton and other areas of the West Midlands had to brave snow and ice to get to work

A spokesperson for Sandwell Council said: “Schools make their own decisions about opening when we have heavy snow or severe ice (and they will often take the decision on the morning rather than the day before).

“Therefore, our best advice for parents/carers would be as follows:

“If your child’s school is closed due to the weather, they will contact parents and carers directly to let them know. Look out for a text or email from school, and check the school website or the school’s social media channels.

“If you don’t hear from your child’s school, presume it’s open as normal. Wrap up warm and wear sensible footwear for your journey.”

Some schools across Walsall were also closed today and whilst there has been no notification of the same tomorrow,  it is expected some maybe unable to open for lessons.

A spokesperson said: “We aren’t aware of any schools who are closed tomorrow currently.

“This may change overnight so for the most accurate up-to-date information we recommend that parents await information from their respective schools, who will communicate with parents and carers directly regarding any closures.

“We suggest to check the school’s websites and social media pages for the latest information.”
