On the eve of Twelfth Night, the traditional start of Carnival season, Dong Phuong Bakery in New Orleans East announced its list of king cake resellers across the city, southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The announcement comes days after the Vietnamese bakery marked the start of the new year by opening pre-orders for pick-up and shipping nationwide for its famous king cakes. Just over an hour later, the wreath-shaped confections were sold out on both the bakery’s website and Gold Belly, an online marketplace that ships products nationwide.
Beginning Tuesday, customers can purchase the king cakes at corner stores, restaurants and coffee shops, though are advised to arrive early at each location, as the cakes often sells out quickly.
Walk-in purchases at Dong Phuong will also be available daily except Tuesdays beginning at 8 a.m. starting Monday, according to the bakery’s website. King cakes will be limited to three per person. In addition, Dong Phuong said Goldbelly would add more slots sometime in February and advised signing up for its waitlist to receive notifications.
The bakery joined the king cake scene in 2008, introducing a recipe to generations of New Orleanians who had grown accustomed to the drier, sugar-topped versions that had long defined the pastry. Instead, Dong Phuong king cakes used fluffy brioche dough layered with thick cinnamon paste and topped in soft cream cheese icing.
Over the years, the bakery has expanded its king cake flavors beyond cinnamon to include cream cheese, strawberry, pecan, coconut, almond and durian.
