13 Years Later, Ridley Scott’s Unexpected Sci-Fi Epic Scores Big on Streaming

Ridley Scott’s new movie will hit theaters in just a few months, but ahead of its premiere, fans are rushing to check out one of his biggest sci-fi epics on streaming. In 2012, Scott debuted Prometheus, the Alien prequel film following a team that ventures to a distant moon searching for clues about humanity’s origins, only to discover they aren’t alone. Prometheus is streaming on HBO Max in America, but globally, the film is having a moment in the VOD top 10 in Bosnia and Jordan. Scott recruited Michael Fassbender (The Killer) and Charlize Theron (The Old Guard 2) to star in Prometheus.

Prometheus was a somewhat controversial film upon its release over 10 years ago. It marked Scott’s return to the Alien franchise after he kicked things off in 1979, but most fans agree it didn’t live up to the high expectations most had set for it. Still, it registered solid scores of 73% from critics and 68% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also found success at the box office. Prometheus grossed over $400 million globally, making easy work of its $130 million budget. The film also stars Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) and Guy Pearce (The Brutalist).

Prometheus was a somewhat unexpected return to the Alien franchise for Ridley Scott, who had passed off directorial control to other big directors like James Cameron for sequels such as Aliens. Scott returned to Alien a few years after Prometheus with Alien: Covenant, but he has since confirmed that his time with the franchise is over. Still, he continues to serve as an executive producer on projects like Alien: Earth, the Hulu series that’s been renewed for Season 2.

When Does Ridley Scott’s Next Movie Come Out?

Ridley Scott’s next movie, The Dog Stars, will be released in theaters on August 28. It was previously expected to premiere in March, but it has since been delayed several months to give the post-production team more time to get it ready for launch. The film stars Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Jacob Elordi, and Guy Pearce, and it’s set in a post-apocalyptic world after a virus wiped out most life on Earth. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Peter Heller, and Mark L. Smith wrote the screenplay with Christopher Wilkinson.

Be sure to check out Prometheus on HBO Max in America and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
