Restaurateur opens new Mexican spot in Stony Point Fashion Park, his second in the mall

A Mexican eatery has joined Stony Point Fashion Park, just a few months after the restaurant’s owner scooped up a pizza joint at the mall.
Corozon Mexicano has taken over a space near the Saks Fifth Avenue at the South Richmond mall.
The restaurant’s menu features tacos with fillings like beef tongue and chicken, in addition to items like tripe soup, burritos, empanadas and tortas. Tacos at the restaurant run about $4 to $5 apiece, and burritos are priced $10 to $12.
Corozon has seating for about 40 people, and owner Omar Al Douri said he invested about $100,000 to build out and equip the restaurant that occupies suite 152 in the mall. Al Douri opened Corozon because he is a fan of Mexican cuisine and there wasn’t already a Mexican restaurant at Stony Point.
“People, and I’m one of them, love Mexican food and we try to focus on the quality. It’s authentic, 100%,” he said.
Corozon first opened in November, but more recently has been closed temporarily due to a plumbing issue that is being fixed. Al Douri said on Tuesday that he expected to be reopened later this month.
Al Douri’s new venture follows his purchase in May of Nino’s Italian Delight elsewhere in the mall. Al Douri said he added espresso and gelato to the menu of the pizza and sub shop since he took over.
Al Douri’s growing restaurant portfolio sprouted out of a COVID-era dive into making pita bread, a hobby which the Iraq native juggled with his work leading a D.C.-based team of a United Arab Emirates-based TV station.
“During the pandemic, I was a bureau chief and baking bread,” he said.
Al Douri eventually left broadcast journalism to focus on food. The Spotsylvania resident previously operated a Mediterranean market and bakery near Fredericksburg, which he sold to finance his entry into Richmond’s restaurant scene.
Other restaurants at Stony Point Fashion Park include Latitude Seafood Co., Fleming’s steakhouse and Southern Kitchen, which relocated to the mall from Jackson Ward in 2024, among others. Anchors at Stony Point include movie theater CineBistro and Dillard’s.
Stony Point is owned by Florida-based Second Horizon Capital, which acquired the mall in 2022.
