Liverpool Ready to Pay £87m to Sign Controversial ‘Future Ballon d’Or Winner’ to Replace Salah

Liverpool are plotting a controversial move to sign Mason Greenwood from Marseille, according to a report from Fichajes.

The striker started his career with Manchester United and scored 35 goals in 129 games for the club before being suspended in January 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman and faced charges including attempted rape and assault before the Crown Prosecution Service announced the case had been discontinued in February 2023.

Scoring 10 goals in 36 games during a loan spell with Getafe, Greenwood earned a permanent move to Marseille in the summer of 2024 where he has since racked up 37 goals and 10 assists in just 59 games.

Liverpool ‘Eye Move For Mason Greenwood’

Such has been the impressive nature of Greenwood’s performances, Liverpool are reportedly interested in a move to sign him.

As per reports from Fichajes, the Reds see Greenwood as a ‘strong contender’ to join the club as a direct replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is expected to leave the club before long.

It’s claimed that this is down to the English forward’s “profile, age, and potential for growth, in addition to offering attacking versatility and a proven goalscoring ability”. The 24-year-old could cost up to £86.7million for any deal to be done.

Greenwood has even been tipped as a future Ballon d’Or winner with Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi saying: “I see him every day, he has a huge potential. I don’t see any other players in Europe at the same level.

“He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or. It will be up to him to decide whether he wants to do everything he can to fight for it or not. At the level of the qualities that nature has given him, that his parents have given him, I think he is worthy of the Ballon d’Or.”

Liverpool Move For Greenwood A Huge Risk

Mason Greenwood

While there’s no doubt that Mason Greenwood is a player who is capable of playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs, a move to Liverpool represents a major risk.

As a player who came through the youth ranks with Manchester United and made over 100 appearances for the club, a move for a fierce rival seems risky. That’s before you factor in the reception from supporters as a result of off-field matters involving the forward.

Liverpool certainly need a replacement for Salah, but Greenwood might not be the best fit for the role. Eventually it can be expected that the 24-year-old to earn a big move, but it would be hugely surprising if that came in the shape of a Premier League return, especially at Anfield.
