Transport for Wales plans new ‘Pay as You Go’ ticket machines at Wrexham General

Wrexham General has been earmarked for three new ‘Pay as You Go’ (PAYG) ticket machines.
Transport for Wales (TfW) has unveiled plans to install the new machines in an application submitted to Wrexham Council.
PAYG allows commuters to use their debit or credit cards to ‘tap on’ at the start of their journey and ‘tap off’ at the end when travelling between TfW’s Wales and Borders stations.
In its application, TfW explains that to enable the rollout of the system, existing ticket gates and validators will be replaced with upgraded facilities.
TfW says the PAYG system aims to “help streamline station services and to provide greater opportunities for joined up travel around the rail network.”
As part of the proposals, new mounted ticket validators would be installed near the main entrance on platform one, another placed next to the adjacent night gate.
A third post-mounted ticket validator would be installed on platform four, near the ramped entrance to the platform.
TfW notes in the application that the installation of the new system “will not compromise the station’s listed status.”
The company adds: “The majority of the beneficial impact of the works will be customer-focused, as ‘Pay as you go’ travel is becoming increasing popular with commuters as an alternative way to
travel, removing the requirement to purchase tickets before you board.
“With the roll out of ‘PAYG’ across the Wales and Borders network, it is imperative that commuters have adequate equipment on stations to ensure they can commence (‘tap on’) or conclude (‘tap off’) their travel at stations, to take advantage of the initiative.
“The harmful impact at the station would be the addition of new cable management systems in station canopies and stations facades on platform one (i.e. galvanised steel conduits) and the excavation of platforms for the installation of new concrete foundations and uPVC ducts for the provision of cable supply to the proposed new validators.
“It is proposed that the installation of the ticket validator on platform four, will not compromise the station’s listed status.
“As part of the design for the two ticket validators proposed for platform one, we have looked at ways to reduce impact where possible.”
The application will be considered for approval by Wrexham Council at a later date.
