Mali vs Tunisia
Africa Cup of Nations round of 16, 7pm Saturday

Tunisia made hard work of progressing to the Africa Cup of Nations knockout rounds, but they have scope to improve and can advance to the quarter-finals by defeating Mali in Casablanca.

The Carthage Eagles started their tournament with a convincing 3-1 success at home to Uganda but allowed standards to slip in a 3-2 loss to Nigeria and 1-1 draw against Tanzania.

However, the Tunisians gathered 28 points from ten games on their way to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and they look a more reliable side than Mali, who missed out on a place at this year’s global gathering.

Mali were quarter-finals at Afcon 2023, and delivered their best performance of this year’s tournament when drawing 1-1 with hosts Morocco in the second of their Group A fixtures.

But the Eagles were far less impressive in draws against Zambia and Comoros and, on the evidence of those efforts, they may struggle to avoid a round-of-16 elimination.
