3 new to Netflix thriller movies to stream this week — one of them is rated 91% by viewers (Jan 8-14)

Netflix subscribers are always on the hunt for new thriller movies to watch. There’s a reason the genre tends to dominate the most-watched movies ranking on the streaming service, and as a huge fan of thrillers, I’m always looking for new arrivals to populate my Netflix watchlist.

I’ve just combed through the latest additions to Netflix’s movie library over the next week, and found three exciting thrillers that are worth considering. These include a firefighting biopic from the director of “Top Gun: Maverick” and a mid-2000s favorite starring the coolest man in Hollywood, Denzel Washington. As well, as an overlooked 2025 pick, I’m pretty excited to stream over the coming day.

No, this isn’t a Stone Cold Steve Austin biopic; instead, “Stone Cold Fox” is an overlooked action-thriller that was released last November to little fanfare.

It might be about to get a second lease on life courtesy of its arrival on Netflix. While I haven’t had the chance to stream it yet, the respectable 60% score on Rotten Tomatoes does suggest this thriller might be worth watching, even if you should keep your expectations in check.

Starring Kiernan Shipka, Krysten Ritter and Kiefer Sutherland, “Stone Cold Fox” sees a young woman (Shipka) break out of an abusive commune, only to be forced to infiltrate the very same place she just escaped from. Her mission is to rescue her captive sister from the group’s queenpin (Ritter), and also in the mix is a crooked cop (Sutherland).

‘Only the Brave’ (2017)

ONLY THE BRAVE – Official Trailer #3 (HD) – YouTube

Watch On

From “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski comes “Only the Brave,” a biographical and thrilling drama inspired by a true story of heroism.

Chronicling the bravery of an elite crew of firefighters in Prescott, Arizona, the Granite Mountain Hotshots, at its peak, “Only the Brave” is as intense as the burning blazes the crew tackles. However, it also takes the time to flesh out its cast of emergency responders to give the stakes real weight. It stars Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Connelly.

The camaraderie, which becomes a strong brotherly bond, between its cast of firefighters is the driving force, and it spotlights the sacrifices made by these everyday heroes as they seek to protect their community from an out-of-control inferno in the summer of 2013. Viewers found this movie extremely impactful, rating it 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Man on Fire’ (2004)

Watch On

Critics and viewers don’t quite see eye-to-eye when it comes to “Man on Fire.” Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s rated a poor 39% by critics, but viewers disagree, scoring it an impressive 89%. Perhaps that’s why it’s already leaped into the Netflix top 10 most-watched list.

I might lean closer to the critics’ score if I were rating the action-thriller myself, but I’ll watch anything starring Denzel Washington, so I certainly don’t consider the two and a half hours spent on “Man on Fire” wasted.

Washington plays former Marine John Creasy, who reluctantly agrees to act as a personal bodyguard for the young daughter (Dakota Fanning) of a wealthy businessman in Mexico City. After bonding with the child, he finds himself on the warpath when she’s kidnapped by a bloodthirsty criminal (Jesús Ochoa). Squaring off against ruthless criminals and uncovering corruption at every turn, Creasy embarks on a one-man mission to rescue his young ward.
