YouTube rolling out search filters update that renames and removes

YouTube is rolling out updates to its video search filters that include renames, removals, and other adjustments. These changes aim to “align better with your expectations.”

After performing a search on the web, tap “Filters” at the right to access these options. On mobile, first tap the three-dot overflow menu.

Old

Under Type (which is now the first column), YouTube has introduced a “Shorts” filter alongside the existing Videos, Channels, Playlists, and Movies.

Duration is next, with a slight tweak from Under 4 minutes to “Under 3 minutes,” as well as “3 – 20 minutes.”

Upload date sees the removal of Last hour, with the first option being Today. There are no changes to Features like Live, 4K, HD, etc.

The Sort By menu has been renamed to Prioritize, while the View count filter is now called “Popularity.” It finds “popular videos related to your search queries,” with YouTube assessing a “video’s view count and other relevance signals, such as watch time, to determine its popularity for that specific query.”

New

Sort By Rating is also no longer available, with YouTube providing the following explanation for the two removals today:

The two filters we’re removing are ‘Upload Date – Last Hour’ and ‘Sort by Rating.’ However, you can still find the most recent search results in one of our ‘Upload Date’ filters, and explore popular, highly-viewed videos using the new ‘Popularity’ filter option.

YouTube says those two filters “were not working as expected and had contributed to user complaints.”

The aim today is to make filters “more intuitive and improve the overall search experience.” We’re not seeing these search filter updates rolled out yet on youtube.com or the YouTube apps.
