Senators sign James Reimer to professional tryout amid goalie struggles

The Ottawa Senators are taking whatever steps they can to solve their goaltending issues.
Veteran goalie James Reimer has signed an AHL professional tryout with the Senators, with the hope that he gets a spot on the NHL team, sources confirm to Sportsnet.
The move to bring in Reimer came as the Senators were in the midst of a rout at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night. Ottawa was down 8-1 after the second period against the NHL-leading Avs.
Ottawa has struggled mightily between the pipes this season, allowing 137 goals against heading into Thursday — the 12th worst mark in the league. That problem has been magnified in recent weeks as No. 1 netminder Linus Ullmark has stepped away from the team due to personal reasons.
Ullmark was taken off the team’s roster on Thursday to make room for the return of forward Lars Eller.
Reimer, meanwhile, hasn’t suited up in the NHL or AHL this season. He did however play for Canada at the Spengler Cup in December, where he played in a 3-2 win over the U.S. Collegiate Selects and stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced.
The 37-year-old played for the Buffalo Sabres and Anaheim Ducks in the 2024-25 season, recording a 10-10-2 record with a 3.04 goals-against average and .896 save percentage.
He signed a professional tryout with the Toronto Maple Leafs in pre-season ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Over his 15-year career, the Morweena, Man., native has a 225-187-65 record with a 2.89 GAA and .910 save percentage in 525 games split between the Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Sabres and Ducks.
