Send to Kindle from Microsoft Word is Discontinued

Amazon made a big deal in 2023 about a new feature that allowed Microsoft Word users to send documents to a Kindle e-reader via Send to Kindle. This feature was only available with a valid Microsoft 365 subscription. Kindle Scribe users got the most value from this feature, since they could write on the documents. Also, with this option, all complex formatting remains intact, thanks to its incorporating fixed layouts. Sadly, all good things come to an end. Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue Send to Kindle in Microsoft Word in February 2026.

Microsoft has updated their Send to Kindle documentation on their website, announcing the sunset of the feature. The text now says, “Beginning February 9th, 2026, the Send to Kindle feature in Microsoft Word is going away across all platforms (Web, Win32, Mac). After this date, the feature will no longer receive support from Microsoft Word.” They also recommended that if users want to upload .doc files to their Kindle, they can use the offical Send to Kindle app for all major operating systems.

Microsoft has not disclosed why it is killing off this useful feature, since it likely resulted in some sales of its Microsoft 365 subscription program. It is very likely that, based on their internal analytics, they found that not many of their users were aware of the existence of Send to Kindle for Word, or that there weren’t enough users to justify keeping it active.
