Costco Canada offers refunds after urgent chocolate recall | Food & Drink

Costco Canada is offering refunds after announcing a recall for two types of chocolates, citing health risks due to possible food contamination.

On Thursday, Jan. 8, Costco Canada shared a notice issued by Nova Scotia-based chocolate company Peace by Chocolate. The company is recalling The Harmony Bar and the Classic Box of 15 assorted filled chocolates, both of which were sold online between Sept. 7 and Dec. 3.

Peace by Chocolate issued the voluntary recall of select pistachio-containing chocolate products. This was done after Tootsi Impex Inc., one of the company’s approved ingredients suppliers, initiated the recall for a specific lot of pistachios due to possible Salmonella contamination. No other products in the Peace by Chocolate variety packs are being recalled.

Food contaminated by Salmonella can still make you sick even if it doesn’t look or smell spoiled. Short-term symptoms for healthy people may include fever, headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

However, complications can happen, resulting in bloodstream infections and hospitalization. Cases can be more severe for the elderly, young children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

The retailer advises customers not to consume any of the affected products. So far, Peace by Chocolate stated that it has not received any reports of illnesses associated with the recalled products.

“To obtain a full refund on the variety packs, you can return either the affected products only or the entire variety pack to a Costco warehouse,” reads the statement.

The announcement is just one of the growing list of recalls in Canada related to pistachios and pistachio-containing products.

As of December 2025, pistachios from Iran and products made with pistachios from Iran have been recalled due to Salmonella contamination, resulting in over 150 people getting sick and 24 hospitalized.
