Edu’s job under threat at Nottingham Forest

He departed Forest after just three games of the season, hinting at his frustration with Edu on many occasions.

Shortly before his exit he said: “I think everybody at the club should be together but this is not the reality.”

Edu is believed to have pushed for the signings of Douglas Luiz from Juventus and Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson, while Nuno and the recruitment team wanted alternative players.

Fulham’s Adama Traoré was one target who Nuno implored the club to sign during the pre-season training camp in Portugal. Traoré is now close to a reunion with Nuno, his former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, at West Ham.

Hutchinson, a £37.5m record signing, appeared for just 10 minutes in two substitute appearances under Nuno. Last month the winger admitted that “Nuno didn’t speak to me”.

Luiz, the former Aston Villa midfielder, has struggled with injury after his arrival but will sign permanently for over £20m if he makes at least 15 league appearances of over 45 minutes.

Edu was also influential in the signing of Arsenal left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko on deadline day. Zinchenko’s loan has also been disrupted by injury which means he has started only one league game under Dyche. There is no recall clause in the deal agreed with Arsenal.

Forest have also agreed to send forward Arnaud Kalimuendo on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt, less than five months after paying Rennes £26m to sign him. Kalimuendo has barely figured for Dyche in the league, but the decision to offload the Frenchman has drawn criticism from fans as the club are still competing in the Europa League.

Edu is expected to attend Tuesday’s game at the London Stadium, but his future remains uncertain.

Marinakis wanted Edu to expand the profile of Forest and his other clubs, Olympiacos and Rio Ave, and initially regarded the appointment as a big coup.

Edu was one of the Arsenal “Invincibles” as a player and then spent five years in football operation roles at the London club, rising from technical director to sporting director.

After completing a period of gardening leave, he was appointed by Forest shortly before the start of this season.

With Forest in danger of relegation to the Championship, the appointment of Edu and Nuno’s acrimonious exit seem intrinsically linked.
