George Best’s first wife Angie diagnosed with colon cancer, son Calum reveals

TV personality Calum, 44, shared the health update in an emotional video posted on social media, saying his mother was diagnosed just a few weeks ago and that the cancer has since spread to her liver.

In the video, Calum said he had struggled to find the right words but felt honesty was most important when it came to his mum’s health.

“A few weeks ago, my beautiful, wonderful mum was diagnosed with cancer,” he said.

“For as long as I can remember, she has lived her life rooted in health, fitness and wellbeing. She has always believed in taking care of the body, mind and soul. But cancer doesn’t discriminate.”

He added: “It doesn’t care where you’re from, how you live, or how healthy you try to be. And now, it’s here – and it’s with my mum.”

Calum said the past weeks had been an emotional shock, admitting he had not cried in years before receiving the news.

“My mum has been diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to her liver,” he said.

“To move forward, we need access to specialist care and professionals who can offer the right treatment. This is incredibly hard for me to say, but financially, I can’t carry this on my own.”

Born in Essex, former fitness instructor, model and Playboy Bunny Angie married George Best in 1978 after the couple met at a dinner party in Los Angeles in 1975, when the Manchester United and Northern Ireland legend was signing to play for the Los Angeles Aztecs.

“I did try and sway George into a more healthier lifestyle,” she told the Belfast Telegraph in 2019.

“That is half the reason he wanted me around was because I was the health fanatic and I tried to help him. But to no avail, sadly.”

Reality star Calum also confirmed that a GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the costs of specialist treatment and care, asking supporters for help “in any way you can”.

“But I truly believe that this info will be invaluable as research suggests one in two of us will get some form of cancer. Yikes. Wish me luck. Onwards and upwards.”
