Premier League club announce 34,000-seater stadium ‘to be proud of’ after removing key barrier

CRYSTAL PALACE have announced plans to build a new main stand which will increase the capacity of Selhurst Park to 34,000.

The redevelopment project, to transform a stand built in 1924, can now go ahead with the club’s purchase of all six houses located in Wooderson Close.

Those properties were a major barrier towards the construction of the new main stand.

Palace’s statement said all residents of the affected properties have been rehoused ahead of demolition.

Chairman Steve Parish said the new stand will provide “a stadium the whole of South London can be proud of”.

Earlier in December, SunSport reported that Palace had been granted a £125 million loan to fund upgrades to Selhurst Park.

The overall cost of their stadium redevelopment plans could rise beyond £150 million.

Their newly-renovated ground is set to feature more general admission seats, new corporate facilities, improved disabled access and a club museum.

Palace’s longer-term aim is to raise the club’s ability to compete with their Premier League rivals who have larger financial resources.

The announcement comes after Palace broke their club transfer record to sign Tottenham Hotspur winger Brennan Johnson in a deal worth £35million.

Palace added in their statement: “A further update on next steps for the redevelopment project will be issued in due course.

“We would like to thank Croydon Council for their continued ongoing support for, and assistance with, this exciting development for South London.”
