Broncos DC can begin interviewing for head coach openings this week

The Denver Broncos might lose their defensive coordinator this offseason, and his head coach interviews could begin as early as this week.
After the Broncos clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFL playoffs, they now have a bye for the wild-card round. That will allow clubs with head coach openings to interview Denver’s coaches during that bye week, as early as Tuesday.
As of the time this post was scheduled, three NFL teams — the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons — have head coach openings, and that number could grow in the coming hours.
The Broncos’ most notable head coach candidate this hiring cycle is DC Vance Joseph, who is expected to be one of the top prospects this hiring cycle. Another name to watch is Davis Webb, who serves as Denver’s offensive pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
If the Broncos lose Joseph to a head coach job, the team would receive a pair of third-round compensatory draft picks as part of the NFL’s Rooney Rule that rewards teams for developing minority coaches and executives.
Jim Leonhard, Denver’s defensive pass game coordinator/assistant head coach, would likely be a top candidate to replace Joseph, but the team does not have an obvious in-house replacement if they also lose Webb this offseason.
