Newcastle news: Harvey Barnes v Anthony Gordon – Who should Eddie Howe start on the left wing?

Considering the stats
Another angle to consider is whether or not Anthony Gordon deserves to play on the left over Harvey Barnes based purely on stats.
This season, Barnes has been one of Newcastle’s most in-form attackers, scoring five goals in 20 Premier League appearances.
In comparison, Gordon has scored just two goals in his 16 league appearances, both of these being penalties, which has had fans questioning whether he should be given priority on the left over a more in-form Barnes.
Before the clash against Leeds, the England international spoke about his form.
He said: “Statistically, I haven’t been where I want to be as a player – I want to be right at the very top – but for the most part, I’ve had consistency in my performances.”
Gordon also talked about how he believes stats can be misleading, stating: “Nowadays, stats are all that matters it seems and that’s ruined football a little bit.
“You can play well, do so much for your team, but if you don’t score or assist, you haven’t played well.
“I don’t really think about it because ultimately I’m trying. There’s nothing more I can do than that.
“I haven’t had too many chances where I should have scored. If I had, that would bother me.”
Many fans have claimed that Gordon’s performances have not warranted a continuous place in the starting eleven, but in spite of the scrutiny and questions, Gordon remains confident in his ability and overall contribution to this Newcastle side.
However, with Barnes delivering in clutch moments and Gordon still struggling for consistency in front of goal, Howe’s faith in his winger will need to start being justified by results.
