For U.S. men’s figure skaters, an intense battle for the third Olympic spot

ST. LOUIS — Two of the three men’s spots on the U.S. Olympic figure skating team are all but spoken for by Ilia Malinin, whose unrivaled arsenal of quadruple jumps has rendered him practically unbeatable, and Jason Brown, the veteran musical maestro whose footwork and spins make judges swoon.
But the competition to be the third American man on the team heading to Milan for next month’s Winter Games is far more difficult to forecast. At least five men are in the mix, each offering different strengths, skating styles and stories. Two of them are second-generation skaters, and four are first-generation Americans.
