Potential shock move to Ajax – Manchester United midfielder identified for January move

Ajax are eyeing a replacement for James McConnell and could target Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte for a shock move.
Soccer News reports on comments from journalist Mike Verweij today. The well connected Dutchman states that Ajax have considered Ugarte this month.
The Manchester United midfielder has been linked with an exit repeatedly in recent weeks. He was out of favour at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim, despite the pair previously working successfully at Sporting Club de Portugal.
The Uruguayan has struggled to settle in Manchester since his arrival from PSG in 2024. That’s despite Manchester United’s midfield problems under Amorim’s reign.
All three parties were believed to be open to a separation this month. A report at the beginning of the month stated that a loan with an option to buy was even an option.
Manchester United midfielder an option
That could make him an option for Ajax. They are searching for a new midfielder after Liverpool cut short McConnell’s loan move. According to Verweij, this situation has led Ajax to discuss Ugarte as a potential option. But, a deal for the Manchester United may be difficult at this point.
“Ugarte, that name has definitely been considered by Ajax,” he said.
“Perhaps he’s still an option, but so far Ajax has heard from United that he’s not available for loan. He was also in the starting lineup this week. That doesn’t make it any easier, of course, but I think he could be a very interesting player to loan out for six months.
“(He) certainly remains an option. But I think Daley Blind is a more realistic option at number six right now.
“He can also play as a left-back and left center back. And there are other names as well. Ugarte has certainly been mentioned, but I think it’s going to be very difficult.”
