National retail chain GameStop closes 400-plus stores, including some in Alabama

Gamers may soon have to find another place to score the latest release.
GameStop, one of the nation’s largest retailers of games, technology and game resell, has closed 435 stores as of January, according to multiple media reports and gsclosing.blogspot.com, a website tracking shutdowns.
As of January 2026, stores have closed in 42 states. In Alabama, Gamestop stores in Birmingham at Riverview Parkway, Hartselle in Hartselle Plaza, Mobile on Airport Blvd., Opelika in Gateway Commons and Troy in Troy Plaza have closed. The chain also closed stores in Alabama last year, including two locations in Birmingham and Montgomery and locations in Leeds, Oxford and Sylacauga.
In 2024, 590 Gamestop stores closed nationwide.
The chain had indicated it planned to close multiple stores in its December 2025 SEC filings, Polygon first reported.
“We anticipate closing a significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025,” the filing reads.
The chain operates more than 2,000 locations across the U.S.
The Texas-based chain has faced financial difficulties in recent years as gamers shifted towards digital downloads over physical games. It’s seen success in shifting towards online sales and niche markets such as collectibles and gaming accessories, Fox News reported.
In its December 2025 earnings report, however, the company showed that revenue continued to decline, falling $39.3 million from 2024.
