Amal and George Clooney Make Their First Appearance at the Golden Globes in a Decade

George and Amal Clooney made their first appearance at the Golden Globes in more than a decade on Sunday. The last time the couple walked the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles was in 2015, just a few months after they were married in Venice in September 2014 and when George was honored with the ceremony’s annual Cecil B. deMille Award. This time, George arrived dressed in a classic tuxedo while Amal wore a form-fitting, coral red dress with ruching and Cartier jewelry.

Tonight, George, who has been nominated for 14 Golden Globes and won four times, his up for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his role in the Netflix film Jay Kelly, directed by Noah Baumbach. His three previous acting wins came from O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2001), Syriana (2006), and The Descendants (2012). He also won a statuette for serving as a producer on Argo, which won Best Motion Picture—Drama in 2013.

George and Amal made headlines recently after the French government confirmed it had granted citizenship to the Hollywood actor and international human rights lawyer and their two children. The Clooneys purchased an estate in France in 2021, making it their permanent residence with the intent of pursuing a quieter life for their young children.

“Here, they don’t take photos of kids. There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s No. 1 for us,” George told the New York Times in December. “We also have a house in the United States, but our happiest place is on this farm where the kids can have fun.”

In an interview with Esquire in October, Clooney said he was worried about raising his kids in Los Angeles and “the culture of Hollywood.” “I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life,” Clooney said. “France—they kind of don’t give a shit about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

The estate is also described by the magazine as having “a hundred acres of grapes and twelve hundred olive trees.” George, who was born in Kentucky, also owns a villa on Italy’s Lake Como. However, while George has said in interviews he can speak some Italian, it’s his and Amal’s twins, Ella and Alexander, who are polyglots. “They speak fluent Italian,” George told Vanity Fair in 2021, “but Amal and I do not. That’s a flaw in our logic, right there.”

Coincidentally, in Jay Kelly, the two-time Academy Award winner plays an aging American film star who takes a train trip from Paris to Tuscany to rediscover himself.
