Apple TV delivers plenty of sci-fi hits every year with shows like Severance and Foundation, but last year the streamer debuted a True Detective dupe that’s in danger of being forgotten. Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) stars alongside Jurnee Smollett (The Order) and Rafe Spall (The Big Short) in Smoke, the true crime thriller following a troubled detective who works with an arson investigator to track down two serial arsonists. Smoke has not yet been renewed for a second season, and the show is now only in the Apple TV top 10 in two countries as it prepares to vanish from streaming charts.

Smoke was compared to True Detective even before it released, but these comparisons proved all the more apt as the Apple TV series continued to release new episodes. Smoke may not have earned the same widespread critical acclaim as HBO’s original series, particularly Season 1 starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but there are some pretty glaring similarities. Both shows deploy the buddy cop method, and both feature two wildly different partners using their skills to hunt down a serial killer/arsonist. Fans of True Detective are almost guaranteed to like Smoke, and vice versa.

Smoke star Taron Egerton first made a name for himself starring as Eggsy in the Kingsman movies, and he truly exploded to new levels of popularity with his performance as Elton John in Rocketman (2017). The musical biopic grossed nearly $200 million at the box office and established Egerton as a capable leading man. Near the end of 2024, he also headlined Carry-On, the Die Hard replacement film that went on to become one of Netflix’s most-watched movies ever.

What’s Next for ‘Smoke’s Taron Egerton?

Smoke’s Taron Egerton will next be seen in Apex, the action thriller co-starring Charlize Theron and Eric Bana. The Netflix original will begin streaming on April 24, and the streamer has not yet announced whether it will receive a theatrical release before its streaming debut. There have been whispers that Egerton is going to reprise his role as Eggsy in another Kingsman movie, but there have been conflicting reports on whether it’s going to happen. Kingsman producer Steve Asbell said he believes another movie is highly unlikely, but Egerton said he has heard rumors that it could be in the works.
