Cody Drameh wants to stay at Hull City according to head coach Sergej Jakirovic, in what will come as a timely boost to the Championship promotion hopefuls.

Drameh, who could have been on his way out of the MKM Stadium in the summer, looked to be leaving in the winter window after Jakirovic hinted the former Leeds United defender was keen to move on.

City were preparing to allow Drameh to leave in order to free up space in their squad, as it was believed he was keen to leave and seek regular football elsewhere after falling behind Lewie Coyle in the pecking order once again,. However, after conversations with his manager, he has seen the 23-year-old opt to remain for the time being.

A move away from the MKM Stadium still cannot be ruled out for Drameh; but as it stands, Jakirovic is planning to have him in the squad for the remainder of the season.

“We had a very nice conversation, like always, with Cody and me,” the City boss told Hull Live. “This was a good conversation between me and Cody.

“He had some problems with lower back pain, and also after the Ipswich game, he felt a knee issue as well, and now he’s back normally with the group.

“He’s happy here. He will be here with us. He’s our player, and that’s it. I’m counting on him, and this is it. Yeah, he told me (he wants to stay).

“I don’t know what changed, or even before, so everything was on him. I’m counting on you. Cody is a good player. He can help us, and he has already shown that he can play good, but he has had some injury issues.

“Everyone can go, but we must get an offer because they are under contract, and he has 18 months left on his contract. If someone wants to buy him, OK. We don’t have a problem with that because this is normal; it’s the market. Like we want some players, and we will see now, but he’s here, he’s happy, and this is most important for me.”

The versatile full-back played 111 minutes on Sunday in the Tigers’ FA Cup shootout win over Blackburn Rovers, before coming off with cramp, though it’s expected he’ll be fit to face Southampton on Saturday.
