Richmond PD offers tips in handling snow squalls, black ice while driving

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – In Kentucky, we know weather can change pretty quickly. With snow squalls, conditions can rapidly get worse.

“Visibility is really impacted when driving through a snow squall. We encourage you to try and slow down, pull off on the side of the road if there is a little shoulder space and as any other precipitation, even where it is low visibility, you can also turn on your hazards and those hazard lights will help other drivers see you before they come up on you too quickly,” said Makenzie Davis, executive assistance at the Richmond Police Department.

Another factor that could create hazards for your commute is black ice especially after the rain we have seen Wednesday.

With temperatures dropping well below freezing Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, bridges and overpasses could develop some serious black ice.

“Bridges and overpasses are things that freeze first, so they can always be a little more slick. But also be mindful about when you know it’s raining and there are maybe certain areas around your street or your neighborhood or paths you tend to travel that get really icy, or really flooded with water. That can turn into ice pretty quickly too,” said Davis.

If you start sliding due to black ice, there are a couple things you can do to try and prevent a serious accident.

“Never stomp on your brakes, because that won’t help you gain any traction quickly. But also, just let your foot off the gas pedal, and you can maybe tap your brakes and turn your vehicle into the skid. That’s going to help you regain control once your tires catch on the ground again,” said Davis.

Davis said during events where we could see this type of weather, their staff will try and patrol typical slick spots and just be more mindful there could be more collisions.
