Properties are being evacuated as police activate a 100-metre bomb cordon at a Devon marina today (Wednesday, January 14).

Devon and Cornwall Police said that “suspected unexploded ordnance” was dredged out of the water at Exmouth Marina.

A 100-metre cordon was set up around the area, which includes Pier Head, Victoria Road and parts of Shelly Road and Mamhead View.

A map, issued by the police, shows the evacuation area in purple.

Residents who have nowhere to go can use LED Exmouth Leisure Centre, on Imperial Road, which is available for those who can’t stay with friends or family.

Police said emergency services have been knocking on the doors of properties in the area and working out what support is needed for those affected.

The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team will assess the find and updates will be issued when further information is gathered, said police.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police are currently down at Exmouth Marina after a suspected unexploded ordnance was dredged out of the water earlier today.

“Officers are currently beginning to set up a 100 metre cordon (purple circle on map) and properties will be evacuated.

“We’re awaiting the Royal Navy EOD team to come and assess the find.

“At this time LED Exmouth Leisure Centre, Imperial Road, is available for anyone being displaced who needs somewhere to go.

“Alternatively, please go to friends/family where possible.”
