Rain transitions to snow before bitter cold Thursday

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Big changes arrive today with an approaching cold front bringing in light rain, some snow, and much colder temperatures.
NEXT BIG COLD FRONT WEDNESDAY: While we start out in the 40s primarily, temps don’t budge much today. Clouds remained locked in with cold rain moving in this afternoon. Winds will pick up out the west and northwest by evening. Showers will start changing to wet snowflakes between 4 and 8 PM, especially in the mountains.
Snowfall(WVLT)
MOUNTAIN SNOW WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are now in effect for the mountains where we expect the majority of the accumulating snowfall to be. Right now, 2-5″ likely in the highest elevations with the highest peaks possibly seeing up to 8″. There may be a dusting to an inch in the foothills and in a few spots on the Cumberland Plateau. Flurries or a few snow showers are possible in Knoxville and across the Valley between 7 PM and midnight, but it shouldn’t amount to anything in most locations. One or two heavier snow showers could put down a dusting, but those will be very isolated.
FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY THURSDAY FOR BITTER COLD: It will get drastically colder with highs in the 30s Thursday, but it will feel like the teens and single digits much of the day. Overnight lows will be in the teens and 20s. Make sure to bundle up!
FRIDAY: Mostly cloudy with a passing shower or snow shower in the mountains, especially at night. Highs will be in the low 40s. Lows will be around freezing.
UNSEASONABLY COLD WEEKEND: Highs will remain in the 30s to near 40 with lows in the 20s. A passing shower or snow shower can’t be ruled out, especially Saturday night.
