Pub which has been shut for a year could be extended

A historic hotel and pub which has been closed for about a year for renovations could get an extension if plans are approved.

Architect RTK Stamford Limited applied on behalf of The Fox and Hounds, in Exton, to build a single-storey orangery at the back of the pub.

The work will involve removing the existing terrace and a willow tree, as well as creating a new garden door to replace the current one, which will be built over by the new extension.

“Through the small-scale alteration, it is very likely that the Fox and Hounds will be more successful and therefore more likely to continue operating in the future,” said the applicant in the design and access statement.

“The building makes a meaningful contribution to the village streetscape.

“Its prominent traditional vernacular style and relationship with surrounding buildings reinforce the historic rural character of Exton.”

The Fox and Hounds is currently closed and undergoing renovations following a change of ownership at the end of 2024.

Works include the conversion of a barn into letting rooms and the reinstatement of the bar after Rutland County Council granted permission in February.

The barn, previously used for hotel storage, will be transformed into four bedrooms, joining the three existing boutique rooms at the pub.

New toilet facilities will also be created, as the current ones are described as substandard, and a one-way system is being considered to allow cars to enter the yard area off the green and exit onto Maltings Yard.

The Fox and Hounds has been approached for a comment but no-one has responded.
