Doomsday’ Trailers Are Hiding A Secret Message

Avengers: Doomsday has now released four different trailers for the upcoming film, ones focused on Captain America, Thor, the X-Men, and a final one about the Wakandans and the Fantastic Four as of yesterday. Except the Russo brothers, directors of the film, say they are not trailers or teasers at all. Here’s what they posted on Instagram yesterday:

“What you’ve been watching for the last four weeks…are not teasers. Or trailers. They are stories. They are clues…Pay attention.”

Before this, no one really pulled out anything that felt like some grand hidden conspiracy of hints about the movie, taking the trailers pretty literally. The biggest “hidden” aspect was discussed in this last trailer, where clearly some characters or background elements have been digitally erased, including, some believe, Doctor Doom himself, which would explain how blank and strange that last spot was.

No one seems to have found anything conclusive, but the main theory is that the Doomsday clocks shown in each trailer correspond to an hour and a minute in Avengers: Endgame, the Russos’ last feature, and that Doomsday is said to be a “direct sequel” to it.

Either the scenes are important, or the lines of dialogue during those scenes are literal clues. The scenes, in this case via Everything Always, are:

  • Steve Rogers code – The Endgame scene where The Ancient One tells Bruce Banner the world would be overrun by the removal of the Time Stone
  • Thor code – The Avengers are capturing Loki. The scene contains the scepter with the Mind Stone and the Tesseract with the Space Stone.
  • X-Men code – Thor and Rocket discuss stealing the Reality Stone in Asgard
  • Wakanda trailer – Rocket talking to Ant-Man about going to space, which takes place right after they discuss the Power Stone and right before they discuss the location of the Soul Stone.

The idea being that these four timestamps all reference scenes in Endgame that span all six stones, perhaps implying they will return in Doomsday in some capacity, despite there being effectively zero hints or alleged leaks about that to date. Granted, this could be a coincidence, as obviously those stones are discussed a zillion times in the movie, but that is the best anyone seems to have come up with at this point. This is not the only theory, by far, but it seems to connect the best, and the rest go into crazy ciphers and other unscrambling processes.

I will say outright that the Russos have been notoriously awful at trying to do secret teases and hints. They have posted images in the past that they say are clues, but they’re nonsensical, weird, and not terribly creative, even if they do hint at something like, say, the X-Men. I’m not sold that what they think is a clever hint is actually clever or useful, based on their past teases.

Perhaps there will be a more definitive answer at some point, but right now, millions of Marvel fans do not seem to have landed on anything final, which by sheer odds, is a little hard to believe if this were something specifically “solvable.” I guess we’ll see. Or maybe not.
