AFC team requests to interview 49ers’ Klay Kubiak for head coach job

The San Francisco 49ers are wrapping up their preparation for their divisional round showdown with the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field this week.
However, while the 49ers are still working, roughly 25% of the league is looking to find their next head coach. With that, San Francisco has received several interview requests for defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.
On Thursday, the 49ers reportedly got their first interview request for offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, as The Athletic’s Diana Russini reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to speak with Kubiak.
Kubiak, 37, joined the 49ers as a defensive quality control coach in 2021. He moved to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2022, offensive passing game specialist in 2024 and this is his first year as offensive coordinator.
Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach of the Steelers earlier this week after the team failed to win a playoff game again.
There are a lot of question marks in Pittsburgh, so it’s far from a perfect opportunity, but with Kubiak looking to become a head coach for the first time, he may not be looking for perfect.
