Yes, the film is based on a true crime. In April 2004, after five years of marriage, Melanie McGuire and her husband, Bill, closed on their first home in Woodbridge, New Jersey. But the couple and their two sons never got to move into that new home. Later that same night, Melanie drugged and shot Bill. She proceeded to dismember his body in order to fit his remains into three separate suitcases, which she then dumped in the Chesapeake Bay.
Fishermen found the first suitcase just a few days after the murder, which launched a police investigation to find the rest of the unidentified body. When the remaining suitcases were discovered, the police released to the public a reconstructed sketch of what the victim might’ve looked like. One of Bill’s friends recognized him, after which the police immediately began to consider his spouse, Melanie, as the prime suspect. The investigation uncovered enough evidence to arrest Melanie in June 2005, roughly a year after the murder.

Prosecutors were able to prove that Melanie bought the murder weapon two days before the murder and that she disposed of Bill’s car in Atlantic City. Additionally, physical evidence was found in Bill’s car that tied Melanie to the crime. Her motive? Melanie, a fertility clinic nurse, had been having an affair with a co-worker, Dr. Bradley Miller, and wanted to start a new life with him. In April 2007, the jury found Melanie guilty of first-degree murder. Despite multiple appeals, Melanie is serving out a life sentence.

Bill McGuire, a computer programmer, was murdered by his wife in April 2004. According to Melanie and her lawyers, Bill was addicted to gambling and physically abusive to Melanie. The defense unsuccessfully argued that there was too little physical evidence connecting Melanie to the body, and that instead Bill was killed by Atlantic City mobsters over his unpaid debts.
