Birmingham City: Approval to travel for Blues medical, transfer process today

Birmingham City have been working on adding Girona’s Jhon Solís to Chris Davies’ squad in the winter market.
Four days ago, we covered claims of Birmingham City moving ahead of Tigres UANL of Mexico in the transfer race. The midfielder was to travel to England for a medical with the Blues that day, but it would appear those claims jumped the gun.
Initial claims reported Birmingham City are signing the Colombian on a permanent move for around €4-5m. Claims from Spain and Colombia then said it’ll be a loan move with a conditional obligation to buy. The Championship side will have to make his stay permanent for €8m if he makes 11 league appearances.
Girona are waiting for the player to join Birmingham City so that one non-EU slot becomes vacant. They need this to register Manchester City’s Argentine attacking midfielder, Claudio Echeverri.
On Thursday, the La Liga side’s manager, Míchel, confirmed this and also said Solís’ exit is a “done deal.”
Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report a short but important update.
Solís moved to Girona from Colombian side Atlético Nacional in September 2023. He is yet to make his debut for Colombia’s senior team, but it’s believed that won’t be an issue.
Birmingham City medical on Friday
Girona, Spain – 08 29 2024: Jhon Solis seen during LaLiga EA SPORTS game between teams of Girona FC and CA Osasuna at Estadi Montilivi. Now the midfielder is set to join Birmingham City.
According to Sierra, the young midfielder has already obtained the work permit, or at least approval, to move to the UK.
After receiving that approval, the journalist states the player will undergo medical tests with Birmingham City on Friday. Solís will join on loan with a conditional obligation to buy set at €8m.
The player needs to clear these examinations and sign his contract for the Championship side to announce his signing.
Solís has played 374 minutes from 12 La Liga matches for Girona this season. He’ll be hoping to get more game time under Davies at Birmingham City.
