Person in federal custody in Pinal County has the measles, officials say

FLORENCE, AZ (AZFamily) — Pinal County has its first measles case for the season and it’s someone in federal custody, health officials said Friday.
The Pinal County Public Health Services District (PCPHSD) wouldn’t release any other details about the details and said the overall risk in the community is low.
This comes a day after Maricopa County confirmed its first measles case. Health officials warned Friday about a possible measles exposure earlier this month in the East Valley.
PCPHSD said there were 220 measles cases in Arizona, with 214 in Mohave County, in 2025 and three so far in 2026.
Health experts said the two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% affective against measles and are recommended for all children.
The measles spreads from an infected person by physical contact or through the air when the patient coughs or sneezes.
Roughly 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed to the measles will become infected.
While the outbreak risk is low, Pinal County health officials said health care providers should be on the lookout for patients who may have a fever and rash, especially unvaccinated people.
