Vidic was sitting alongside legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson for Michael Carrick’s first match in caretaker charge of United.

The ex-midfielder signed a deal until the end of the season earlier this week.

And fans flooded onto social media to desperately call for Carrick to welcome his former team-mate back to Old Trafford in a stunning attempt to turn United’s season around.

One said: “Vidic is there next to Sir Alex!! Vida, help us please.”

Another added: “Seeing Vidic and Ferguson together made my heart smile.”

A third supporter chimed in: “Is that f****** Nemanja Vidic in the stands? Get your kit on you Serbian b******.”

But one fan reckons the ex-defender could become Carrick’s successor, writing: “Fergie sat with the next caretaker manager… Vidic.”

Vidic lifted five Premier League titles and clinched the Champions League during his trophy-laden spell with United.

He also made 300 appearances for the Red Devils, wore the captain’s armband and notched 21 goals along the way.

But Vidic left Old Trafford after eight-and-a-half years and joined Italian giants Inter Milan in 2014.

After a two-year stint at the San Siro, the former Serbia international announced his retirement.

Vidic has been keeping a close eye on United since his exit, leading to him brutally slamming their recruitment.

The no-nonsense centre-back also questioned the character and resilience of the squad.
