18 Years Later, Jason Statham’s Darker ‘Mad Max’ Replacement Revs Up on Streaming

It’s been a few years since Jason Statham last starred in a sci-fi thriller, but one of them most underrated sci-fi movies of his career is finding a second life on streaming. In 2008, Statham starred alongside Tyrese Gibson (Fast X) and Ian McShane (John Wick: Chapter 4) in Death Race, a dystopian thriller following an ex-con (Statham) who is forced by the warden of his prison to compete in a car race where inmates kill each other. Death Race is not streaming anywhere in America right now, but the film is picking up steam on VOD platforms around the world in countries like Japan and Poland.
Death Race may be absent from streaming right now, but considering the film’s rising popularity, it likely won’t be long before it returns to one of the big streaming services in America. The film was panned by critics, which led to it earning a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also holds a 60% score on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Death Race is extremely similar to the concept of the Mad Max movies, which also have a dystopian feel and feature a dangerous race where people die. Most fans and critics would agree that Mad Max: Fury Road is objectively a better movie, but fans of Tom Hardy’s classic actioner will likely enjoy Death Race, too.
Paul W.S. Anderson wrote the script for Death Race, and he also directed the film. It’s a remake of the 1975 film, Death Race 2000. Anderson most recently wrote and directed In the Lost Lands, the fantasy bomb starring Dave Bautista that’s based on George R.R. Martin’s book of the same name. He’s also known for his work on the Resident Evil movies starring Milla Jovovich.
When Does Jason Statham’s Next Movie Come Out?
Jason Statham’s next movie, Shelter, will be released at the end of this month on January 30. The film comes from director Ric Roman Waugh, who also directed the recent arrival, Greenland 2: Migration, starring Gerard Butler. Come August, Statham will team up with another Gerard Butler director, Jean-François Richet, who helmed Plane in 2023. Mutiny arrives this August, and it also stars Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders). Statham will finish the year with The Beekeeper 2, the action sequel that stars Pom Klementieff. Timo Tjahjanto is directing The Beekeeper 2, taking responsibilities from David Ayer.
