Washington’s birthday – better known as Presidents Day – is the third federal holiday of 2026 and is about a month out.
Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming holiday.
When is Presidents Day?
Presidents Day is Feb. 16.
Do I have to work on Presidents Day?
As Washington’s birthday is a federal holiday, all nonessential government workers should be off Feb. 16.
Most retail locations and fast-food restaurants will be open on the third Monday in February.
Banks, courts will be closed on Presidents Day
Major banks have varying hours for Presidents Day 2026.
As a federal holiday, most federal and state courts will be closed Feb. 16, but you should check on the status of your specific court matter beforehand.
Will mail be delivered on Presidents Day?
FedEx locations will be open on Presidents Day, but will have only modified services.
The United States Postal Service will not deliver mail on Feb. 16.
UPS locations will be open on Presidents Day, and packages will be delivered normally.
Presidents Day established longer than 100 years ago
Presidents Day was initially established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation’s first president, George Washington.
It was believed the Founding Father was born on Feb. 11, 1731, according to a then-used Julian calendar. But when the colonies shifted to the Gregorian calendar in 1752, Washington’s birthday was also moved to Feb. 22, 1731, according to the National Archives.
