DHS: Man detained by ICE in Minneapolis dies in federal custody in Texas

A Nicaraguan man taken into custody in Minnesota has died in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, according to federal officials.
ICE officials say 36-year-old Victor Manuel Diaz died of a presumed suicide at Camp East Montana in El Paso, Texas, on Jan. 14; however, the investigation into Diaz’s death is ongoing, and the cause of his death has not been officially determined.
Diaz was taken into ICE custody in Minneapolis for an immigration violation on Jan. 6, ICE officials said.
Federal officials say Diaz entered the U.S. in March of 2024, where he encountered border patrol agents who served him a notice to appear before an immigration judge. In August of 2025, a judge ordered Diaz be removed in absentia, ICE officials said.
On Jan. 12, ICE processed Diaz “as a final order of removal and detained him pending removal from the U.S.,” according to ICE authorities.
Local officials react
Governor Tim Walz is asking for an investigation into Diaz’s death, saying in a post on X on Sunday evening, “This is deeply disturbing, especially after reports of growing concerns about the conditions at this facility. An investigation must take place.”
U.S. Senator Tina Smith is also calling for a probe into the death, posting on X, “This is another senseless tragedy, ICE has an obligation to keep detainees safe. We need a complete and impartial investigation of what is happening in these detention centers.”
