Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal and Michigan state holiday celebrating one of the most famous civil rights icons, falls on Monday, Jan. 19 this year, prompting stock market closures.

Monday, Jan. 19, is MLK Jr. Day, which honors the accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday falls on the third Monday in January.
Is the stock market open on MLK Day?
The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19 and will reopen for trading at normal hours, 9:30 a.m. ET to 4 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Is the US bond market open on Jan. 19, 2026?
According to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, the U.S. bond market will be closed for MLK Day and will reopen at normal hours on Tuesday.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is “capitalism at its best, the belief that the free and fair markets offer every individual the chance to benefit from success,” the public entity says on its website.
Dating back to 1792, it’s the largest stock exchange in the world, based on total market capitalization of its listed securities.
Who was Martin Luther King Jr.?
King, a Baptist minister and social activist who, among others, led the civil rights movement in the U.S. from the 1950s until he was fatally shot in 1968.
King rose to national prominence advocating for nonviolence to achieve civil rights, according to the King Center.
Were he alive today, King would’ve turned age 97 this month.
