President Donald Trump attended the College Football Playoff national championship game between Indiana and Miami on Monday night at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
When Trump appeared on the big screen during ESPN’s broadcast, the reaction from the crowd was mostly positive, with cheers ringing out around the stadium.
Trump watched the game from a suite alongside Sen. Jim Banks of Indiana, an Indiana University alum who took office earlier this month after spending eight years in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to USA TODAY.
Also in the box were Trump’s daughter Ivanka, her husband Jared Kushner, who was a senior adviser during Trump’s first term, and Trump’s granddaughter Kai, a rising golf star.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a Miami graduate and former U.S. senator from Florida, was also spotted at the game.
Since returning to office less than a year ago, Trump has made a habit of showing up at major sporting events. He made history last year by becoming the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl and has also been seen at the Army–Navy game and several UFC events.
Last summer, after congratulating Chelsea FC players on their FIFA World Cup win, Trump awkwardly stood among players as they lifted the trophy in celebration.
Later, he claimed that the trophy the players were hoisting was a replica, and that the original sat in the Oval Office.
“They said, ‘Could you hold this trophy for a little while?’ We put it in the Oval Office,” Trump said, via YouTube. “And then I said, ‘When are you going to pick up the trophy?’ He says, ‘We’re never going to pick it up. You can have it forever in the Oval Office. We’re making a new one.’”
“And they actually made a new one. So that was quite exciting … It’s in the Oval right now.”
