Newcastle vs PSV preview

Newcastle contested a drab goalless draw with Wolves at the weekend but they are used to playing front-foot football on Tyneside and can sweep aside PSV Eindhoven.

Eddie Howe’s side have had a difficult week as the missed opportunity on Molineux came hot-on-the-heels of the 2-0 loss at home to Manchester City in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, but they can ill-afford to look back as they continue to compete on four separate fronts.

The Magpies have taken ten points from their last four Premier League games and have all to play for in the Champions League as they strive to bridge the two-point gap between themselves and the top eight.

Automatic qualification for the round of 16 would need a strong finish to the league phase, plus a few favourable results across the continent.

However, Newcastle will take things one step at a time and they know that a win over PSV would at least keep them in the hunt going into their matchday eight visit to defending champions Paris St-Germain.

PSV are two points worse off and will be more concerned about cementing a place in the playoffs.

The Dutch side hold a 16-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie, having won 17 of 19 league fixtures, but their Champions League experience has been a rollercoaster ride featuring the massive highs of a 6-2 win at home to Napoli and 4-1 victory at Liverpool along with the lows of home defeats to Union Saint-Gilloise and Atletico Madrid.

PSV are an attack-minded team who score and concede plenty of goals but head coach Peter Bosz has a tricky selection for the trip to Tyneside because he is without some key injured players, including highly-rated USA right-back Sergino Dest, and may be reluctant to use Moroccan duo Ismael Saibari and Anass Salah-Eddine, who have only just finished their involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Dest and Salah-Eddine are key defenders, while Saibari is their second-top scorer with 11 goals.

All three were in the starting line-up for PSV’s November triumph over Liverpool so it would be a blow if, as seems likely, none of them are involved from the off against Newcastle.

PSV have made a solid enough start to the year with back-to-back wins at home to Excelsior and away to Fortuna Sittard, maintaining their firm grip on the Dutch title race, but they face a step up in class against Newcastle.

Veerman could be cautioned

Newcastle are strong in midfield and their aggression will need to be matched by the away side. A feisty contest is on the cards and there is every chance of a booking for PSV midfielder Joey Veerman, who can be loose with his tackling.

Hall can have his say

Hall has shown his attacking instincts in recent weeks and will be asked to continue in the same vein. The 21-year-old is capable of delivering dangerous balls into the box and looks overpriced to notch his first assist of the Champions League campaign.

Harvey Barnes to score anytime

Barnes has been Newcastle’s most effective attacker in recent weeks and looks ready to play a match-winning role.

Bruno Guimaraes to commit two or more fouls

The Brazilian has committed ten fouls in six Champions League appearances and could add at least a couple more to the tally

Both teams to score

PSV have been involved in several high-scoring Champions League games and that trend looks set to continue.
