Potential Major Winter Storm This Weekend

- Brief mid-week warm up
- First Alert Weather Days Sat/Sun for likely significant snow
- Major cold this weekend
Wednesday
For your Wednesday, we’ll see a lot more sunshine with much more seasonable highs in the mid to upper 40s. This warmer temperature trend will continue through the end of the week. It will be a nice break after the chill we saw to start the week.

As mentioned, Thursday and Friday will remain mostly comfortable with highs at or above average. However, clouds will build during the day Friday ahead of this weekend’s winter storm.

Weekend Winter Storm
We’re turning our eyes to the weekend as we’re seeing a setup for the growing likelihood of arctic air and significant winter weather. We’re issuing a First Alert Weather Day for your Saturday and Sunday due to that growing potential. Though we are still several days out, the likelihood of very significant impacts is increasing.

There is a moderate chance that much of the area receives 6″ or more of snow Saturday into Sunday. There is also the possibility that the snow could mix with freezing rain toward the NC border over the Southside. That amount could be more or less and we will fine tune details in the coming days.
There is a medium chance of 6″ of snow or more this weekend over our hometowns.(WDBJ)
However, this isn’t a slam-dunk snow event just yet. Recent trends have shown more warm air being fed into the upper atmosphere, which would introduce sleet and/or freezing rain into the equation. Should this happen, snow totals would take a major hit.
The type of precipitation we see will depend on how much warm air is fed into the upper atmosphere.(WDBJ)
Winter Storm Preparedness
