Australian Open day six preview

The Australian Open is heating up and the big guns are standing their ground in the top half of both the men’s and women’s draws including Carlos Alcaraz.

The Spaniard is just 1-33 to progress past Corentin Moutet on Friday, while Britain’s Cameron Norrie faces a more daunting prospect against Alexander Zverev.

Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva, three of the key contenders for the women’s singles title, are also in action on day six.

Daniil Medvedev vs Fabian Marozsan predictions

Daniil Medvedev has been exuding confidence in Australia and can brush aside third-round opponent Fabian Marozsan in straight sets.

The 29-year-old began the year with his 22nd ATP Tour title in Brisbane, where he dropped just one set against five capable rivals. He has started well in Melbourne, too, beating Jesper De Jong in straight sets and recovering from a first-set tiebreak loss to beat Quentin Halys 6-7 6-3 6-4 6-2 last time out.

Medvedev has won 16 of 18 sets this year and, in Marozsan, he faces a player who he has swept past in straight sets in two previous meetings.

Francisco Cerundolo vs Andrey Rublev predictions

Francisco Cerundolo has looked superb in victories over Zhizhen Zhang and Damir Dzumhur but the Argentinian, backed by his band of vocal supporters, will need to find more for a third-round clash with Andrey Rublev.

Cerundolo has, however, won three of their four previous meetings, the three most recent of which featured five tiebreaks, so it could pay to anticipate a long match.

Tommy Paul vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina predictions

After a serious foot injury and a spell on the sidelines, Tommy Paul appears back to the peak of his powers and has followed up a run to the Adelaide semi-finals with straight-sets victories over Aleksandar Kovacevic and Thiago Agustin Tirante at Melbourne Park.

Paul, a Melbourne semi-finalist in 2023, faces a third-round clash with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who is unlikely to have much crowd support after referring to a group of rowdy Melburnians as “four ignorant drunks” after his second-round win over Reilly Opelka.

This is not a match the Spaniard has enjoyed – Paul has won all four meetings, two of which came at the Australian Open, including a 6-1 6-1 6-1 triumph last year – and the American can finish him off early.

Jasmine Paolini vs Iva Jovic predictions

Pint-sized Italian Jasmine Paolini is almost perennially underestimated and she should be shorter in the betting for her clash with American Iva Jovic, who could struggle to back up easy victories over Katie Volynets and Priscilla Hon.

Jovic is a talent, but she has never beaten a top-20 player and two meetings with Paolini have gone the way of the Italian world number eight, including a comfortable 6-3 6-3 success at last year’s US Open.
